My forehead crashes into the pane of glass, causing it to shatter into so many pieces, that even an obsessive compulsive inventory manager wouldn't have the patience to clean up all the remains. The wonder of the world is gone, I know for sure. A moment came that stopped me on a dime. I went skydiving, I went rocky mountain climbing, I loved deeper, and I spoke sweeter, and I gave forgiveness I've been denying... Someday I hope you get the chance to live like you were dying.

Nothing's quite the same now, I just say your name now... But it's not so bad, you're only the best I ever had. Are you out there? School Respecting Wicca on Halloween

A Washington state school district is canceling its annual Halloween celebration, and the explanation has some parents baffled.

"Let them have their 30 minutes of dressing goofy and having candy," Silas Macon, a father of two school-age girls, said Wednesday outside Maplewood Elementary School after learning that the grade-school tradition of a party and parade in costume during the last half-hour of class before Halloween night won't happen this year in the district.

A letter sent home to parents Wednesday said there will be no observance of Halloween in any of the district's schools.

"We really want to make sure we're using all of our time in the best interest of our students," Puyallup School District spokeswoman Karen Hansen said.

The superintendent made the decision for three primary reasons, Hansen said. First, Halloween parties and parades waste valuable classroom time. Second, some families can't afford costumes and the celebrations thus can create embarrassment for children.

Both of those reasons seemed sensible to the parents who spoke to ABC News affiliate KOMO-TV in Seattle. But the district's third reason left some Puyallup parents shaking their heads.

The district said Halloween celebrations and children dressed in Halloween costumes might be offensive to real witches.

"Witches with pointy noses and things like that are not respective symbols of the Wiccan religion and so we want to be respectful of that," Hansen said.

The Wiccan, or Pagan, religion is said to be growing in the United States and there are Wiccan groups in Puyallup.

On the district's list of guidelines related to holidays and celebrations is an item that reads: "Use of derogatory stereotypes is prohibited, such as the traditional image of a witch, which is offensive to members of the Wiccan religion."

"I do lots of things that are not revolving around wearing a black outfit and stirring a cauldron," Wiccan priestess Cheryl Sulyma-Masson said in an interview with ABC News in which she explained that Wiccans, or Pagan Clergy, celebrate nature.

This is not the first time the district has expressed concern about offending followers of the Wiccan religion.

An internal e-mail from October 2000 warned that "the Wiccan religion is a bona fide religion under the law, and its followers are entitled to all the protections afforded more mainstream religions. Building administrators should not tolerate such inappropriate stereotyping (images such as Witches on flying brooms, stirring cauldrons, casting spells, or with long noses and pointed hats) and instead address them as you would hurtful stereotypes of any other minority."

This year, however, is the first time the superintendent decided to cite that concern as one of the reasons for canceling in-school Halloween activities.

"They're so worried about being politically correct anymore that we're not allowed to do much of anything," said Tonya Reynolds, whose daughter attends Maplewood Elementary.

"If you don't want costumes, call it a harvest party. We don't have to take out complete Halloween. We could still do something for our children," said parent Loni Andrews, who promised to challenge the ruling at the next school board meeting.

Some children said they will miss the usual festivities.

"Yeah, it does bother me because I would really like to go around and dress up," Maplewood sixth-grader Grace Macon said.

Macon said that while the Halloween celebration might take up a little class time, it also gives children a reason to like school.

"I think it's terrible," she said. "I think it just kind of takes away from the little stuff they get to do that's fun at school."

Hansen said questions of lost study time and disrespect for religious belief played into the decision.

"It's a little bit of both," she said. "I don't think you can balance respect with instructional time and we would always be looking to do both. We want to make sure our students are respectful of all religions and all cultures.

Hansen also said that the PTA and teachers have been notified that they can hold parties or other Halloween events after the school day is over. Classroom time, however, will not be used for Halloween celebrations. Hansen says concerns about other holidays and parties held in school will be decided on a case-by-case basis.

As a practicing Wiccan, I would like to comment on this.

First of all, I'm not offended in the least at costumes of witches with big pointy noses and broomsticks. I am somewhat offended at the ignorance of a lot of people to our sacred day, being Samhain. But not in a huge way, I realize that Wicca is a minority of a religion, so I don't expect everyone to know what October 31st symbolizes for us.

But since I can state it here, I will:

Samhain, (pronounced SOW-in, SAH-vin, or SAM-hayne) means "End of Summer", and is the third and final Harvest. The dark winter half of the year commences on this Sabbat.

It is generally celebrated on October 31st, but some traditions prefer November 1st. It is one of the two "spirit-nights" each year, the other being Beltane. It is a magical interval when the mundane laws of time and space are temporarily suspended, and the Thin Veil between the worlds is lifted. Communicating with ancestors and departed loved ones is easy at this time, for they journey through this world on their way to the Summerlands. It is a time to study the Dark Mysteries and honor the Dark Mother and the Dark Father, symbolized by the Crone and her aged Consort.

Originally the "Feast of the Dead" was celebrated in Celtic countries by leaving food offerings on altars and doorsteps for the "wandering dead". Today a lot of practitioners still carry out that tradition. Single candles were lit and left in a window to help guide the spirits of ancestors and loved ones home. Extra chairs were set to the table and around the hearth for the unseen guest. Apples were buried along roadsides and paths for spirits who were lost or had no descendants to provide for them. Turnips were hollowed out and carved to look like protective spirits, for this was a night of magic and chaos. The Wee Folke became very active, pulling pranks on unsuspecting humans. Traveling after dark was was not advised. People dressed in white (like ghosts), wore disguises made of straw, or dressed as the opposite gender in order to fool the Nature spirits.

This was the time that the cattle and other livestock were slaughtered for eating in the ensuing winter months. Any crops still in the field on Samhain were considered taboo, and left as offerings to the Nature spirits. Bonfires were built, (originally called bone-fires, for after feasting, the bones were thrown in the fire as offerings for healthy and plentiful livestock in the New Year) and stones were marked with peoples names. Then they were thrown into the fire, to be retrieved in the morning. The condition of the retrieved stone foretold of that person's fortune in the coming year. Hearth fires were also lit from the village bonfire to ensure unity, and the ashes were spread over the harvested fields to protect and bless the land.

Various other names for this Greater Sabbat are Third Harvest, Samana, Day of the Dead, Old Hallowmas (Scottish/Celtic), Vigil of Saman, Shadowfest (Strega), and Samhuinn. Also known as All Hallow's Eve, (that day actually falls on November 7th), and Martinmas (that is celebrated November 11th), Samhain is now generally considered the Witch's New Year.

Symbolism of Samhain:
Third Harvest, the Dark Mysteries, Rebirth through Death.

Symbols of Samhain:
Gourds, Apples, Black Cats, Jack-O-Lanterns, Besoms.

Herbs of Samhain:
Mugwort, Allspice, Broom, Catnip, Deadly Nightshade, Mandrake, Oak leaves, Sage and Straw.

Foods of Samhain:
Turnips, Apples, Gourds, Nuts, Mulled Wines, Beef, Pork, Poultry.

Incense of Samhain:
Heliotrope, Mint, Nutmeg.

Colors of Samhain:
Black, Orange, White, Silver, Gold.

Stones of Samhain:
All Black Stones, preferably jet or obsidian.

Basically, I see Samhain as being a day to remember our anscestors, and those witches who have died for us in the past. Think of it as *kind of* like Independence Day for those of us in the US. Remembering those who died for us. Granted, these witches didn't die for the freedom of our country, but they died for unjust reasons.

And to take the time to remember them, as well as family relatives and anscestors is very important to me.

The one thing that I think this country has exploited is the fact that since I am a witch, everyone expects me to dress up like one on "Halloween". Or even during normal days in the year, they expect to find a point hat and a broom in my closet.

It's not the school's fault for people's ignorance about the Wiccan holiday, and it's not the children's fault for society's exploitation of witches.

I say let them have their candy, but also enlighten them that Halloween may not be just about candy, but it is also a very special day for those in the world that are Wiccan.

(For those of you on the EvBoard, you probably saw this post, but I figured I'd post it here as well, for those of you not on the EvBoard.)

Think of it this way; if it were any of the major religions being exploited, there would be chaos. Wicca is a minority, I realize this. But that's no reason to not take the time to educate society of it's beliefs.

Personally, I am sick and tired of people finding out I'm Wiccan, then asking me to turn them into a frog, or not to cast an evil spell on them, or asking me if I worship the devil, etc... the list goes on and on. I was actually told once, while sweeping at my old apartment, "you're a witch, shouldn't you be cackling right now?" Now, that roommate was Jewish. How would he feel if I said, "you're Jewish, shouldn't you be spinning a Dreidel right now?" Both statements are unfounded and ignorant. But the different is I have the knowledge and respect to not mock other religions.

Sure, every now and then, you'll hear me make a snide comment about Catholicism. I was also raised Roman Catholic, so I have a little more insight, and what I say is not unfounded or untrue; it's my opinion on how I feel about the way the Catholic church works.

Let me get a few things straight here:

I am a witch
I practice witchcraft
I have an altar
I have a Book of Shadows (a witch's diary)
I cast spells, and do rituals
I worship nature
I do NOT worship the devil
I don't even BELIEVE in the devil. As stated in Blair Witch 2, that's a Christian concept.
I don't cast evil spells. I can't. It's against my religious beliefs.
I do NOT fly on a broomstick
I do NOT wear a pointy hat
I do NOT eat little children

Above is for those who are too ignorant to educate themselves on Wicca.

Now damnit, let's stop acting like Wicca is an evil religion, and educate the next generation.

ATTENTION ANYONE WHO HAS OR IS PLANNING ON INSTALLING WINDOWS XP SERVICE PACK 2: READ FIRST!!!

So. We get a bubble at the bottom of our screen in our little taskbar that says there are updates ready to install. So my godfather clicked on it, as he always does normally, and everything seems fine.

Until later that evening...

All of the sudden, our internet doesn't work. For any of the users. (There are 3.) Everyone's getting frustrated.

So, I, being a computer guru in training (thanks to Raymond), decide to see if there's anything I can do to help, after he tried reconnecting our network. (Which worked for a few hours...)

I did what he told me to do, but everything was looking fine. The network was set up correctly, so I was like "wtf? Let's see what else I can do..."

So I start clicking on things that mean nothing to me, but it looks important. Not uninstalling anything, or changing any "important looking" settings, but making sure everything was up to par.

Everything looks fine.

So, as a last resort, I decide to go into System Restore. It asks me when I would like to restore it back to, and all of the sudden, I see the problem. On Thursday, Windows XP Service Pack 2 was installed. That was the update my godfather installed.

In the words of Raymond, "DON'T TOUCH SP2 WITH A TEN FOOT POLE."

So, I figured, well if I restore the computer back to before we installed the SP2, everything will be kosher.

For some reason, we still didn't have internet. So, we decide to go back even further.

Everything is still not working properly. So, Raymond goes to Microsoft's website, and gets the information as to how to uninstall SP2.

I try everything it tells me to do, but everything I try, it says it cannot find the specified file. So, basically, SP2 is NOT on the computer anymore??

Now I'm confused...

So, I try calling Gateway, and it has it's own toll free number to call for people having problems with the Service Pack. There's one REAL big red flag there. So, I go to call the number, when all of the sudden, the little bubble in the toolbar comes up again, telling me there are updates to be installed.

So I quickly click the "X" to get rid of it, and voila! MSN Messenger is signing on. I have internet again.

The only thing I can think is that it took my slow ass computer a while to realize that it had been restored, and me clicking the "X" let the computer remember, "wait, we don't have the Service Pack anymore! We can work again!"

So, I went to "My Computer", right clicked, and went to Automatic Updates, and clicked "do not update." I'm keeping it that way until they fix all the glitches with the SP. (Thanks Mike for letting me know how to turn off auto updates!)

***So to all of you who have Windows XP, DO NOT INSTALL ANY UPDATES UNTIL MICROSOFT FIXES THE SERVICE PACK.*** If you've already installed updates, go to System Restore, and see if there was the SP installed. If it was, go back however many days you can before it was installed.

How to do a System Restore:

Go to Start
Click on All Programs
Go to Accessories
Go to System Tools
Click on System Restore

It will walk you through the process from there. It should have a list of what has been updated for each day. If you see "Installed Windows Service Pack 2" anywhere, go back to the day before it was installed.

Granted, some people are not having problems with SP2. But a LOT are. So I figured I'd warn everyone, so you don't have to go through what I went through. Believe me, it's very frustrating.

So, I've been working hard on the piano, trying to learn various Evanescence songs, so I can learn to play more intricately. A few of you heard my first attempt at recording Breathe No More, but I knew, like, the first 30 seconds of the song.

Well, I have learned more, and actually am starting to be able to play it without looking! (At least part of it...)
